The Dodge City Red Demons had no answer for Junction City junior Qua’vez Humphreys and senior AJ Dickerson Friday night, and for the second time this season lost to the Junction City Bluejays by a score of 73-58.

This loss means Dodge City will play for third place in the 2019 Tournament of Champions Saturday at 3 p.m. They’ll face Shawnee Mission South.

Junction City will face Bishop Carroll at 5 p.m.

Dickerson had a game-high 31 and a game-high 12 rebounds, Humphreys had 17 and 10 rebounds, and senior Kody Westerhaus had 10 for the Bluejays. For the Red Demons, senior Noah Sowers had a team-high 19. Junior John Johnson had a team-high eight rebounds to go along from 8 points.

Dodge City finished the night shooting 39.3 percent from the field, 24 percent from 3-point territory. Junction City shot 50.9 percent from the field, and 30 percent from 3-point territory.

Junction City outrebounded Dodge City 46-24, and had 22 second-chance points to the 6 for the Red Demons.

 

Chronological summary

The Red Demons and Bluejays were true to form through the first quarter, each scoring regularly in what was a very back-and-forth opening period. Junction City opened on a 4-0 run, but Dodge City countered with a 10-0 run to take a 10-4 lead until Junction City called a timeout with 4:14 left in the quarter. Coming out of it, Junction City went on a 13-0 run that gave them a 17-10 lead. Dodge City recovered a little, however, and scored 6 straight to send the teams into the second quarter with Junction leading 17-16.

In the second quarter, Junction City outscored Dodge City 21-18 to take a 38-34 lead into the mid-game break.

Through the first half, Dodge City senior Noah Sowers had a then-team-high 14 points and a game-high four assists. Junction City senior AJ Dickerson had a then-game-high 20 points and was one of three players with five rebounds, the other two being Bluejay senior James Hall and Red Demons junior John Johnson.

In the first half, Dodge City shot 44.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point territory. Junction City shot 48.5 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from 3-point territory. Junction City outrebounded Dodge City 21-12 but had seven turnovers to Dodge City’s four.

The Red Demons outscored the Bluejays 15-12 in the third, and going into the final quarter, Junction City led 50-49.

In the fourth, Junction City outscored the Red Demons 23-9 to seal the game.
