The Hutchinson Salthawks ended their stay in the 2019 Tournament of Champions with a win Saturday, beating the Wichita North Redskins 60-45 to finish the Tournament in seventh place.

The Salthawks opened the game on a 6-0 run, but the Redskins made it a game by going on a run of their own. The rest of the opening quarter was back-and-forth, but the Redskins led 16-14 at the end of it.

“You’ve got to tip your hat to North,” Hutchinson head coach Ted Webster said. “I mean I’ve watched in the two previous games and quite honestly they didn’t come out with the same energy they came out with tonight. Their bench was into it, coaches were excited, their kids played hard, they made a couple tough shots and that’s all it takes to get a lead at the end of the first quarter.”

The Salthawks responded however, and outscored the Redskins 16-3 to take a 30-19 lead into halftime.

“I think Tate Webster got his feet under him,” Ted Webster said. “Our guards did a good job getting him the ball. We knew we had a size advantage in there and we used it. The other big thing was our pressure. We wanted to get up into and try to get them to turn it over and I thought that was pretty effective in the second quarter.”

Key to Hutch’s win was senior Tate Webster, who had a game-high 25 points and tied Wichita North senior RJ Hunter for a game-high eight rebounds. Hunter had 10 points, but the Redskins were led in points by junior Dayvon Carter who had 12. Hutchinson senior Jacob Cole was also in double-figures, finishing with 13 points.

As a team, Hutchinson finished with 21 turnovers, four less than the 25 North had, and had 16 steals, two more than North’s 14.

Another key was the way the Salthawks also did a better job capitalizing on turnovers, finishing with 26 points off turnovers compared to just 7 by the Redskins.

“You hit a nail on the head, I mean that was a key to it,” Webster said. “They were getting turnovers, and we were getting back and stoping them defensively. We were getting turnovers and finishing on that end, and that made a big difference. Points off turnovers was a big stat.”

In the end, despite strong efforts by the Redskins to make a comeback, the Salthawks were able to prevail and get the win, the second of the year for the Salthawks.
