(Culver, TX.) -- The Dodge City Community College Women’s Basketball team was able to come up with a big win in the regular season finale. It was a game that they had well in hand for most of the 2nd half until a run by Northwest Kansas Technical College brought them back into the game. The Conqs were able to hold it off and whether the storm known as N’Dea Frye who scored 34 points, and pull out the 71-66 victory.
It took both teams a little bit to get their offenses going in the first quarter Sunday afternoon. The first two minutes went by with neither team scoring until a 3-point shot was hit by Northwest Kansas. That would take the lid off for both teams as Dodge City would answer by scoring four straight. Northwest Kansas would hit a second 3-pointer at that time giving the Mustangs the early 6-4 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. Northwest Kansas held an 8-4 lead when Ashley Nelson drilled a 3-point shot to cut the early deficit to 8-7 with 4:18 to go in the first quarter. The Mustangs answered with a 5-0 run before the Conquistadors would hit another 3-pointer. This time, it was Asia Pool knocking it down. A couple possessions later, Northwest Kansas would knock down a 3-point shot of their own with fifteen seconds to go. The last possession of the quarter belonged to the Conquistadors. Haleigh Hill was able to draw a foul and hit both free throws to end the quarter down 15-14.
The second quarter would start a little bit faster than the first, with both teams trading buckets to start. Dodge City would take the lead 18-17 on a layup by Hill at the 8-minute mark. With the Mustangs leading 20-18 the Conquistadors would begin to make their move and create some separation, over the next four minutes the Conqs would go on a 12-0 run to take firm command of the lead 30-20. Northwest Kansas Tech would fight back a little bit in the last two minutes to go into the break with the Conqs leading 34-28.
In the first half, the Conqs shot 48 percent from the field despite making just 2 of 11 3-point attempts. Kaylee Dale and Haleigh Hill scored 8 points, apiece.
The second half would start with the Mustangs pulling within 2 points however, the Conqs were able to keep them at arm’s length for the moment thanks to a traditional 3-point play by Allie Baker. Northwest Kansas would again cut it to two before the Conquistadors would go on another run. This time it was an 11-0 run to give the Conqs a 48-35 lead with 3:51 to go in the quarter. Both teams would trade baskets the rest of the way in the third quarter to allow for Dodge City to take a 53-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
To start the fourth the Mustangs would cut the deficit to 8 after a 5-0 run, Baker would again answer, this time with a 3-point shot. The Conqs would do a good job keeping the Mustangs just out of reach for the next several minutes, maintaining a 16-point 66-50 lead with 3:57 to go. Northwest Kansas would begin to make their move. It started with a pair of free throws and snowballed from there as they would score 12 unanswered to cut the lead down to 4 points. The Conqs would be able to make their free throws in the last minute leading to a 71-66 victory.
In the game, the Conquistadors shot 38 percent overall and 23 percent from the 3-point arc. Good games from Allie Baker and Haleigh Hill led the team. Baker scored 20 points overall, with 16 of them coming in the second half. She shot 6-9, and also added 8 rebounds. Hill scored 16 to go along with 9 rebounds.
The Conquistador Women’s Basketball team will travel to Cloud County to take on the T-Birds Wednesday night in the first round of regionals.
