(Concordia, KS) -- The Dodge City Community College Women’s Basketball team was unable to advance to the next round in the Region VI final and saw their season end against Cloud County Community College Wednesday Night. Dodge City Community College shot out of the gates with a 5-0 run in the first quarter and did not slow down much from there. After Addison Rowley and Allie Baker allowed for DC3 to get the first five points, the T-Birds of Cloud answered with a 3-pointer. Fortunately for the Conquistadors, that did not slow their momentum as they would again score five unanswered points to take an early 10-3 lead. The two teams would exchange baskets for the remainder of the quarter. It would go into the second quarter with Dodge City Community College leading 18-9.
The second quarter started similar to the first with Dodge City scoring four unanswered right off the bat. A few moments later, Rowley would make a layup to give the Conqs a 24-14 lead. A couple of possessions later Scout Frame of Cloud County would hit a free throw to spark a 6-0 T-Bird run that spanned the next several minutes. It wasn’t until 1:24 remaining that DC3 would be able to end the run with a jump shot by Baker. That jump shot helped to close the half on a 6-0 run to go into halftime with the Conquistadors leading 30-20.
In the first half Dodge City Community College shot 11-31, and 4-9 from 3-point range. They turned it over 8 times in the half as well.
Allie Baker scored 7 points in the first half and Addison Rowley had 5.
The third quarter started much the same as the first two for the Conquistadors. They would outscore Cloud County 6-2 over the first two and a half minutes to give them their biggest lead at fourteen points. From that point on it would become a battle as the T-Birds would go on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to cut the deficit to four points, 36-33. The Conquistadors would still be able to keep them at arm’s reach, however by outscoring Cloud 10-4 the rest of the third to take a 43-37 lead into the final quarter.
The first five minutes of the fourth quarter would see both teams answer each other. At 5:14 with the Conquistadors leading 50-43, Cloud County would score seven points, combined with a five-plus minute stretch of scoreless play for the Conq offense would result in a tie game with just under two minutes to play in the fourth. Baker would make a jump shot to give Dodge City the two-point lead, moments later it would be answered by an Emmiley Hendrixson layup would tie it up again with forty-five seconds remaining. Both teams would have chances go unfruitful in the final minute to head into a five-minute overtime period in this do or die game.
In the overtime period, both teams were able to start out with baskets early to make the score 54-54. That was when Cloud County Community College started to take over. They would go on a critical 7-0 run, giving them their first lead of the game and going up 61-54 with 1:25 remaining in the game. A Rowley 3-pointer would cut the deficit to four for Dodge City, but that is the closest they would get as the T-Birds were able to seal the game by making their free throws and coming away with the 70-61 victory to end the season in heartbreaking fashion for the Conquistadors.
