The Dodge City/Fort Dodge/ Cimarron Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association recently hosted a group of Bent’s Fort Chapter members for a trip down the trail in Ford and Gray Counties The Bent’s Fort Chapter visited sites from the Leander Herron storyboard near Coon Creek east of Fort Dodge, honoring the only Medal of Honor recipient for bravery on a mission between Fort Dodge and Fort Larned. The group learned about the Coronado Cross and its importance to the area and toured Fort Dodge, learning from storyboards placed by our local chapter about its important mission on the trail.
The trickle-down effect of pet owners returning to work after the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a spike in the number of pet surrenders and the Ford Couty Humane Society is full. There are five indoor and five outdoor runs and they are all occupied, society president Toni Meyers said.
The DCHS girls swimming team finished 3rd at the WAC championship in Great Bend. Ashlyn Armstrong brought home 3rd place in the 200 free and 2nd place in the 500 free.
The Boys Golf team competed at the Great Bend invitational May 12. The team finished second with a total of 332.

There’s just something about a toad that “conjures” up visions of a witch in a huge black hat with a big hairy wart on her nose mumbling spells as she stirs a bubbling pot full of potion. Toads just look creepy, and then of course there is that propensity they possess to pee on anyone picking them up. Despite having a face only, a mother could love, toads are extremely important to our planet. It is reported that a toad can eat ten thousand insects in one summer and are a big part of nature’s pest patrol (the person who did the counting for that study really needs a life!)
