April 1, 2023 Dear Friends … So Week 12 of the 2023 Legislative Session started off with my Staff Assistant -- who just happens to be a lawyer -- coming into my office and saying (jokingly), “Senator, we have a problem: there’s an article in yesterday’s Topeka paper that says there are 7,900 active attorneys in the state, but not a single one in Hodgemon County. Does that mean we can claim you got 100% of the ‘legal’ vote in Jetmore – or that I can move out there and run unopposed for County Attorney?” I responded “yes” to both, but qualified it by defining “unopposed” as meaning “no one would vote against you – just for the other guy!” – and that’s no April Fool! Reminded me a little bit of the quip our venerable former U.S.

CHAD scholarships encourage growth in the field

On Thursday, March 30, Dodge City Community College (DC3) hosted a luncheon meeting for nearly 130 high school students from across the state as part of Construction Day. The event, which is planned by the Dodge City/ Ford County Development Corporation and the Community Housing Association of Dodge City (CHAD), encourages students to view construction as a viable career field and helps to introduce them to the DC3 Building Construction Technology Program.

DCCC: Women’s golf captures second place at Jayhawk Match II

Dodge City women's golf continued in conference action this spring as they competed in the Jayhawk Match II hosted at Hill Crest golf course in Coffeyville and earned a second-place team finish. T he Conquistadors would post a first-round score of 362 and then follow that up with a 355 in round two to finish with a team score of 717 (+141) to finish second place; finishing above third place by 100+ strokes. Leading the charge for the Conqs was the play of Tara Phipps who finished tied for fifth place with a two-round score of 170 (+26), shooting rounds of 83 and 87. Zoe Miller finished in the Top 10 as she earned ninth place carding a score of 176 (+32) posting rounds of 93 and 83 at Hill Crest golf course. Taylor Ruch earned 12th place with a score of 185 (+41) and Kaitlyn Crough placed 13th with a score of 186 (+42). The Conqs will wrap KJCCC play on April 7 to 8 when they compete at the Jayhawk Match III in Fort Scott at Woodland Hills golf course.

KRISTINA RANAE HUDSON

Kristina Ranae Hudson, 46, of Casper, Wyoming, passed away March 27, 2023, at the Wyoming Medical Center, Casper. She was born February 11, 1977, at the USAF Hospital Dyess Air Force Base, Abilene, Texas, the daughter of Allen D. Hudson and Roberta L. “Bobbi” Kruse. Kristina has resided in Casper for the past 15 years, formerly of Billings, Montana. She graduated from Dodge City High School, Dodge City, Kansas, with the class of 1995. Kristina held various jobs during her life. She enjoyed the outdoors, watching movies, spending time with friends, and most of all spending time with her children. Kristina is survived by her father, Allen Hudson and wife Teresa of Abilene, KS; mother, Bobbi Jensen of Drumright, OK; two children, Elizabeth Rose of Billings, MT and Allen Keno of Casper, WY; brother, Brian K. Hudson and wife Kimberly of Dodge City, KS; and two sisters, Ellen D. Cales and husband Bret of Arkansas City, KS, and Cassandra M. Klingenberg and husband Jon of Manhattan, KS; and many extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Donna Mae Davis; maternal grandparents, Carl and Joyce Westvang and Jess and Magdalena Kruse; brother, Jess Michael Monroe; and aunt, Cheri Westvang. Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, April 6, 2023, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with Pastor Joel Grizzle officiating. Burial will follow at the Geneseo Cemetery, Geneseo. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present. Memorials may be given to the Allen Keno Education Fund or the Salina Rescue Mission in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
