PROTECTION – Charles Edward Mosshart, 74, died Saturday, January 15, 2022. He was born March 22, 1947 in Ashland, Kansas. Charlie graduated from Ashland High School in 1965 and then went on to technical school to study machining.
He married Dana Schultz in 1965. They had 2 sons, Shawn and Richard. In 1984 Charlie met and married Sandra Louise Hancock and they had one son, Jay Ross.
Charlie loved working with his hands, his animals and his guns. He lived most of his life on the family farm 3 miles north of Ashland. He was a member of the Protection Christian Church.
In 1977 he began trucking as an independent with his own business and did that until 1994, along with his farming, cattle and sheep. After he quit trucking, he began pumping a few oil wells along with his farming activities.
In 2003 Charlie and Sandy opened a restaurant in Protection, Kansas, known as the Farmhouse Bakery and Kitchen and later built their home near Protection.
In 2017 he suffered a devastating setback when the Starbuck wildfire blew through Clark County and he lost every head of livestock in the fire, but like all the other farmers and ranchers that had so many losses he bounced right back. Starting over he was able to build a small cow herd again before his death.
Survivors include: his wife of 37 years, Sandy Mosshart; sons: Shawn of Lexington, Kentucky, Richard and wife Leisa of Pratt, Kansas, and Jay Ross of Austin, Texas; a brother, Sam and his wife Becky and sister, Joyce Bay and husband, Jerry Bay; one grandson, 2 great-grand-sons, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl Fred Mosshart and Ruth Whittington Mosshart.
Memorial service will be Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 10:00 am at the Protection Christian Church with Rusty Westerfield officiating. Burial will follow at the family farm in protection. There will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place.
