February 25, 2023 Dear Friends … Week 7 of the Legislature is a time of transition known as “Turnaround,” which loosely interpreted means that all House and Senate bills have to be voted out of their originating Chambers and sent across the Rotunda to the other side. Generally regarded as the “halfway point” in our Session, it also gives rise to such terms as “exempt” and “non-exempt” committees and bill “blessings.” The former classification applies to big ticket panels like Tax, Ways and Means, and Federal and State Affairs, which can continue to consider measures within their jurisdiction even after the “deadline.” The Senate President can also do what is called “bless” a proposal to allow it to be heard and “worked,” notwithstanding its falling outside the scope of normal subject matter assignment. All that said, the net effect is a flurry of all-day (and usually late evening!) Floor activity in a race to “move” everything of high importance to Leadership.
U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) visited the Dodge City Community College (DC3) campus on Monday, Feb. 20, to announce that a $500,000 Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) grant had been awarded to the college for its forthcoming industrial maintenance program. With these grant funds, DC3 plans to purchase classroom and lab equipment for the new workforce development program, which is slated to begin fall 2024.
DODGE CITY, KANSAS - Lorene Julia Herron, age 84, of Dodge City took the Lord’s hand on February 23, 2023 walking out of her tired crippled body and into the gates of Heaven. Lorene was born July 21, 1938 in Pueblo Colorado to William and Francine Salem (Shoe), becoming the second oldest of their ten children.

When thinking of the Old West, one can’t help but mention Dodge City, Kanas, and its footprint of rich history for the American Cowboy and infamous lawmen. Wyatt Earp may have reached national fame in Tombstone, Arizona, but he along with his clan of brothers and friends John “Doc” Holliday and Bartholomew William Barclay “Bat” Masterson, were already household names from their start in Dodge City.
The Lady Demons picked up 35-32 win and a piece of the WAC title Feb. 23 in Liberal thanks to the heroics of Becca Unruh in the final seconds of the game, when she drained a 3-pointer to upset the Liberal Redskins again.
After a several weeks of disappointing losses, the Red Demons took the court Feb. 23 in their season finale against Liberal.
