Colorful murals to brighten downtown Dodge City

Dodge City was selected to receive a Community Challenge Grant from AARP Livable Communities and AARP Kansas to create murals in our historic downtown. The Dodge City Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) is proud to announce that the project is nearing completion.

MEADE - Pete D. Bartel, age 85, passed away early Monday morning, February 13, 2023, at the Lone Tree Retirement Center, Meade, Kansas.

SEDLEY DUANE HALL

DODGE CITY - On Sunday, January 8, 2023, surrounded by family, Sedley Duane Hall, loving husband, and father of five, passed away peacefully at the Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City, Kansas at age 101. An advocate for education, Sedley earned a doctorate in education and spent the majority of his professional years as a college professor at Alma College in Alma, Michigan. Sedley was born in Stratford, Iowa in 1921, but moved with his family to Long Beach, California during the “Dust Bowl” days. He had a gentle, quick-witted, generous spirit which belied his fierce determination. After graduating from Wilson High School in California, he enlisted in the Navy in 1940. As a SeaBee, he cleared jungles for landing strips in the South Pacific during World War II. He later served as a naval aviator, flying torpedo bombers off aircraft carriers. After the war, he used the GI Bill to go from a high school diploma to a doctorate, while raising five kids with his much-loved wife, Betty Ann. As a new university graduate, he taught at Curtis Agricultural High School in Curtis, NE, and then was an elementary school principal in McCook, NE. After receiving his doctorate in education, Sedley was a member of the faculty at Alma College for 25 years, the latter fifteen as chairman of the Education Department.

DCCC eSports Hosts Valentine’s Tournament

The Dodge City Community College (DC3) eSports Club hosted a Valentine’s Smash City Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 11. The tournament, which was sponsored by McDonald’s, took place in the DC3 Student Union, where nearly 35 eSports athletes competed for more than $800 in cash prizes. Tournament winners include: Rafa Garcia, first place; Mario Garcia, second place; and Nick Bowman, third place. In addition, DC3 students Moises Agular and D’Arren Vilsaint were awarded $250 scholarships.

Lady Demons claim regional title

The Dodge City girls wrestling team will be sending 10 wrestlers to the state tournament after battling through a deep regional tournament and earning a regional championship this weekend at the Civic Center.

DODGE CITY - Rick left this earth on February 9th, 2023 at KU Medical Center surrounded by his family and dear friends. He was born on January 9th, 1966 in Kinsley, KS to parents John and Phyllis (Schmitt) Indiek.
