TOPEKA — A coalition of voting rights groups says Dodge City’s election system is designed to prevent the community’s Latino population from holding office on the city commission. In a complaint filed late Thursday in federal court, the coalition argues the “at-large” election system is unconstitutional and a violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Dodge City - Shelby Andrews, 83, died December 13, 2022 at Brookdale Senior Living Center in Dodge City. She was born on December 15, 1938 at Colorado Springs, Colorado the daughter of Howard and Martina Betz. She married Gerald Gene Schwien on October 12, 1957 in Ness City he preceded her in death on November 14, 1961 she then married Carrol Neal McCain on June 5, 1965 in Ness City, Kansas he preceded her in death on December 6, 1994. She later married Don G. Andrews on October 23, 1997 in Branson, Missouri he preceded her in death on July 11, 2017. Mrs. Andrews loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She also loved to keep a very clean and tidy home. Mrs. Andrews always looked forward to a great day of shopping. She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.. She is survived by two sons Troy McCain and wife Sarah of Dodge City; Rory Schwien and wife Theresa of Denver, Colorado. DODGE CITY - Werner Carl Teufel (aka Butch and Coach) passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022. He was born to Hugo and Gretchen (Kolk) Teufel in Wichita, KS on December 30, 1938, moving to Dodge City, KS in 1966. Survivors include his wife, Karen, daughter, Shannon (Kris) Meis, granddaughter, Lauren (Nathan) Cox, grandson Logan Meis (Sopaneda Choun), great-grandchildren Cambri and Creed Cox, nephews Hugo (Maritza) Teufel, and Kevin (Shannan) Kimble. DODGE CITY - Fedailia “Phil” M. Johnston, 85, died Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at KU Medical Center, Kansas City. She was born May 9, 1937 at Quinter, Kansas, the daughter of Anton Joseph and Christina (Kuntz) Dreher. She graduated from Quinter High School and Cosmetology School in Salina. She worked as a hairdresser in Pratt until her marriage to Billy “B.D.” Johnston at St. Michael Catholic Church in Collyer, Kansas on May 20, 1957. She later worked at Dodge City High School, Hardee’s and the Kansas Soldier’s Home at Ft. Dodge as a cook until retiring in July 1999. She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Altar Society both in Dodge City. She was a devout woman of faith and a prayer warrior. Survivors include: a son, Robert “Bob” Johnston and wife Cherise, Dodge City; 2 daughters, Janet Scheffe and husband Lawrence “Lonnie”, Kansas City, Missouri and Deanna Johnston, Dodge City; 2 brothers, Larry Dreher and wife Nita, Parkville, Missouri and Tim Dreher and wife Charlene, WaKeeney, Kansas; 5 grandchildren, Bryce Johnston and wife Jessica, Tyson Johnston, Sarah Driskell and husband Joel, Steven Scheffe and Shawn Scheffe and wife Mikaila; 6 great grandchildren and one on the way; and 2 nephews and 6 nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Billy, on February 16, 2001, a son, William “Willie” Johnston, a brother, Richard Dreher, a niece, Christina Dreher and an angel baby Mary. Vigil service will be at 7:00 pm Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am Monday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 901 Central Ave., Dodge City, with Fr. Wesley Schawe presiding. Burial will be at 2:30 pm Monday in the Coats Cemetery, Coats, Kansas. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel. Dodge City’s boys cruised past the Woodward Boomers 73-35 for their first win of the season, but the Lady Demons struggled in a 42-28 loss Tuesday Dec. 13 in Woodward, Okla. In the boys game, Dodge City took advantage of 30 Woodward turnovers and converted those into over 39 points on the night. This game by far is the best effort as a team for the Red Demons as they made ten three pointers and shot over 50% in the game.
