Carl Lynn Mackey, 60, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at his home. He was born Feb. 4, 1952 in Montezuma, Kan., the son of Carl Monroe and Vera Mae (Stewart) Mackey.
Mackey graduated from Montezuma High School and attended Dodge City Community College and Weber State University. In high school, Mackey was the basketball captain and won a lot of medals and broke many records for long distance running. From 1974 to1977, Mackey served his country during the Vietnam war as a Sergeant in the United States Army, 101st Airborne and was also the Recondo Team Leader of the Curahee's.
Mackey was united in marriage on March 24, 2004 to Pamela June Stehm in Fredonia, Kan. He was a member of the Independence Ward Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the NRA and the Rotary club. For many years, Mackey worked as a telephone and DSL Service Technician for Centurylink Telephone.
He is survived by his wife Pamela of the home; his parents Carl and Vera Mackey of Dodge City, Kan.; sons Carl Duane Mackey of Wichita, Kan, Adam Leon Stehm, Travis William Edwards, Justin Alton Edwards, all of El Dorado, Kan., Jericho Cody Cavely and Michael Nicholas Moroni Mackey, both of Fredonia, Kan.; daughters Lanesa Adel Poulton of Pharn, Texas, Sherry Elizabeth Edwards and Tiffany June Edwards both of El Dorado, Kan., and Monica Joy Mackey of Fredonia, Kan.; brothers, Larry Joe Mackey of Dodge City and Les Ray Mackey of Salina, Kan.; a sister, Karen Colleen Dastrup of Lawton, Okla.; father-in-law Harold William Stehm; mother-in-law Marjory Carol Stehm of Tulsa, Okla., and 16 grandchildren.
Mackey was preceded in death by one son, SSG Bryant Wayne Mackey on Feb. 20, 2008 in Iraq.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at Countryside funeral home with Bishop Kerry Holyoak officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Fredonia Cemetery. Memorial are suggested to Harry Hynes Hospice and may be left at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home in Fredonia, Kan.
