TOPEKA — Garden City teacher Jimmy Beard, a Democrat, filed paperwork Wednesday entering the August primary for the 1st Congressional District with hopes of defeating incumbent U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann in the general election.
Summertime brings the welcome smell of hotdogs and bratwursts sizzling on the grill. And a facility in Russell, Kansas, produces more of this micro ingredient than anywhere else in the country, helping bind together hot dog buns, pet food, plant-based meats and more, all while utilizing 100 percent Kansas-grown wheat.
LANE COUNTY, Kansas — This time of year, the wheat growing in this part of western Kansas should be thigh-high and lush green. But as a months-long drought continues to parch the region, many fields tell a different story.

New redistricting maps for Ford County this week will be made available on fordcounty.net. Those maps will also be presented at a free “Election 101” class in the lobby of the Ford County Government Center, 100 Gunsmoke St., at 6 p.m.
Secretary of State Scott Schwab made a visit to Dodge City June 6 and his first stop was to meet with county clerk Debbie Cox. During their visit, Schwab and Cox discussed existing measures that are in place to ensure elections are secure as well as numerous election security improvements passed and signed into law during the 2022 legislative session.
