OLATHE — Gov. Laura Kelly planned a trip to a Hy- Vee store to sign a bipartisan bill Wednesday phasing out over three years the state’s 6.5% sales tax on groceries, but would prefer the Legislature reconsider her proposal to promptly wipe out the state tax on groceries.
Last week saw much needed rainfall across the state, but areas in southwest Kansas missed out on it once again. Much of southwest Kansas has gone nearly 300 days without an inch of precipitation. Annual average rainfall is about 12” in southwest Kansas, and much of the area has seen about 1/3 of that over the past year and less than an inch since wheat was planted in the fall.
The Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition this month awarded Latin Lactation in Southwest Kansas a grant to extend the run time for a bilingual billboard that promotes workers’ rights to lactation accommodation in the workplace.
Right now, some people are probably grumbling about lane closures on the Second Avenue Bridge. We take it for granted we can easily cross the Arkansas riverbed in Dodge City without inconvenience or paying a toll. But that wasn’t always the case.

The second Saturday of May marks the 30th anniversary of one of America’s great days of giving – the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Locals are encouraged to leave non-perishable food donations by their mailboxes for letter carriers to collect on May 14.
People tend to collect empty bags to an excess, especially the drawstring ones made of royal purple colored cloth (and other assorted colors) Crown Royal liquor bottles come in. Now there is something positive and productive to do with those empty bags while at the same time disposing of any evi dence of having imbibed.
