How in the world did that happen?

Still a little hobbled and unsteady on my feet from recent knee surgery, here I sit at the computer, listening to the spring wind howl outside and reminiscing about past turkey hunts. These memories are probably as close as I’ll get to harvesting a turkey this spring, but memories of one particular fall turkey hunt keep popping into my mental in-box.

City mulls over master plan to re-do the Wright Park Zoo

The master plan for Wright Park Zoo grew stagnant in the midst of COVID-19, but city leaders have agreed it is time to reignite public interest in the $4.7 million “re-do the zoo” initiative. At the April 18 Dodge City Commission meeting, city manager Nick Hernandez asked commissioners to consider the future of the zoo since very little fundraising has been possible in the two years since the completion of the master plan.

Treasurer hopeful Rep. Johnson visits Dodge

Representative Steven Johnson, who is seeking the state treasurer seat in November, was a special guest at Dodge City First Baptist Church April 24. The Republican from small town Assaria sang the national anthem the night before for the Southwest Kansas Storm game and would the next day travel back to Topeka, as the Kansas State Legislature returns to the current session after a three-week break.

The newspapers of Dodge City

There were two in most cities - generally one was Democrat and the other Republican. Unlike today when most newspapers try to be neutral, the two main newspapers in Dodge City during the late 1880’s and early 1890’s were the “Ford County Democrat” and the “Globe-Republican.” Though there were other newspapers in Dodge City space only allows elaboration of these two publications.
