This was a matchup between two of the top girl’s teams in 6A with Wichita Heights hosting Dodge City for the sub-state championship. Both teams came in with 18-3 records, but the Lady Demons would come away with the 52-46 win over the Falcons.
This week’s athletes of the week are Anna Stein and Taegan Pedigo from Spearville High School. Anna Stein is having a great season.
Dodge City softball team played host to Seward County for a Jayhawk Conference showdown on Saturday and dropped a pair of tight contests despite holding early leads, falling 7-5 and 6-3. The Conqs with the losses fall to 7-10 on the season and 3-2 in KJCCC action with their next contest a makeup game at home against Northwest Kansas Tech on Tuesday, March 8 at 3 p.m.
The Bucklin Red Aces basketball team advanced to the Sub-State championship game after defeating Moscow 85-52 in Thursday night’s semi-final. The Red Aces offense took off and Moscow had no answers for Bucklin.
The Dodge City Red Demons defeated Washburn Rural in the Class 6A boys sub-state championship 56-49, securing their spot in the state tournament. Washburn Rural took control of the first quarter by leading 16-10 at the end of the quarter but the rest of the game was all Dodge City as they outscored Washburn Rural 46-33 in the last 3 quarters.
For the first time in 40 years, the Dodge City men’s basketball program has claimed a Region Championship as they beat Hutchinson 98-96 in overtime to secure the Region VI Championship title and an automatic bid to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.
Diamond Athletics Cheer & Dance has been well established in the Dodge City community and surrounding areas for many years now. For over 15 years it has been a place where kids of all ages can go to learn how to stunt, flip and tumble and learn all the various styles of dance from hip hop to ballet.
After a first-round bye in the Region VI Tournament, the Dodge City men’s basketball team faced off with Colby in the Quarterfinals in Dodge City and battled the Trojans to an 89-84 victory. The win is the first since the 2014-15 season for the Conquistador men’s team in the quarterfinals of the Region VI tournament.
The Dodge City Red Demons boy’s basketball team hosted Topeka High to open postseason basketball Wednesday. The Red Demons entered as the 3rd seed in 6A West. The Red Demons opened with a 18-4 advantage over the Topeka High through the first quarter. Topeka High fought hard in the second and third quarters but the Red Demons entered the fourth quarter up 52-36 and out-scored their opponent 21-11 to end the game with a 73-47 victory.
The Dodge City women’s basketball team after their first playoff win since 2004-05 traveled to Hutchinson to take on the No. 25 Blue Dragons in the Region VI Tournament Quarterfinals and the Conquistadors fell 72-52 to cap the season.
