Dodge City track and field team continued the indoor season on Saturday when they traveled to Wichita to compete at the Herm Wilson Classic at Wichita State competing against multiple other JUCOs, along with NAIA, NCAA Division I, and II schools.
The Dodge City Lady Demons jumped out to a 9-0 lead taking advantage of early turnovers by the Hays Indians. Hays responded with a 7-0 run and had the ball three times down 9-7 but couldn’t tie or take the lead. The Red Demons went on a 10-5 run to take a 19-12 lead, but the Indians responded with an 8-0 to take their first lead at 22-21. The advantage was short-lived as the Lady Demons took a 23-22 lead at halftime.
Dodge City Middle School hosted a girls Wrestling Invitational that featured all the WAC middle schools. Great Bend Middle School won the event with 206 points but DCMS took 3rd place with 155 points and CMS finished 5th.
The Spearville Lancers basketball team improved to 8-6 on the season after taking down Kinsley, 49- 44, on Friday night. The Lancers led 17-7 at the end of the first quarter but Kinsley outscored the Lancers 18-11 in the second quarter to cut the lead down to 29-25 at halftime.
Dodge City men’s basketball made it two straight wins on the road against top-tier competition as they came from behind to claim an 83-77 win over the Butler Grizzlies on Saturday. The win moves the Conquistadors to 20-4 on the season and 15-3 in KJCCC action, while also handing Butler their first loss at home this season.
For the first time since 2004, the Dodge City women’s basketball broke out the brooms and earned a season sweep of the Butler Grizzlies after picking up a 69-55 road victory. The win moved the Conquistadors to 14-9 on the season and 9-8 in KJCCC action, while always marking the first road win against Butler since 2004.
Hays used a 6-0 spurt in the first quarter to take their second lead at 10-5 and kept the advantage through a low scoring first half against the Dodge City Red Demons this past weekend. Hays led 10-7 after one quarter and held the Red Demons to just one point over the first five minutes of the second quarter.
The Red Demons had 11 student-athletes committing to college on National signing day this past weekend. DCHS has got a lot of great programs, a lot of great coaches, and all benefit from the talent of athletes like we have seen today, and for this sports writer as well as members of this community, it’s going to be fun to see them go out and have success in their individual colleges and universities.
Thursday night didn’t disappoint in the rivalry between Dodge City and Garden City as the No. 8 Conquistador men’s basketball team traveled to Garden City and took down the No. 18 Broncbusters in a top-flight KJCCC battle, winning 103-96.
Our Athlete of the week helped the Bucklin Red Aces win the SPIAA Tournament this past weekend. Jaron Lindsay is averaging 10 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this season. In his last game versus Meade, Lindsay scored 12 points and got 10 rebounds and he has scored 142 points so far this season while grabbing 108 rebounds.[SUBMITTED PHOTO]
