DODGE CITY- Gerald “Sonny” Gaul, 87, died Monday, August 1, 2022 at St. Catherine’s of Dodge City.
He was born September 18, 1934 at Dodge City, the son of Everett Leslie and Mildred E. (Marine) Gaul. He was a graduate of Ford High School and grew up in the Wilroads Garden Christian Church. On July 26, 1954 he married Phyllis Freeman at Clayton, New Mexico. He was a truck driver and Maintenance Superintendent at Robinson Brick and Tile in Denver, Colorado for 40 years until retiring on September 1, 1990. After retirement he and Phyllis moved to Ford where they lived for over 18 years until moving to Dodge City in May 2020. Sonny coached little league football, baseball and basketball in Thornton, Colorado for 11 years. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Phyllis, Dodge City; 3 children, Ginette Layne Haag and husband Vern, Lake Havasu, Arizona, Mark Stuart Gaul, Lake Havasu and Ryan Douglas Gaul, Hutchinson, Kansas; 3 grandchildren, Brittany Tobin and husband Joe, Las Vegas, Nevada, Jordan Johnston and husband Chris, Lake Havasu and Cheyenne Gaul, Hutchinson; a great grandson, Kayson Johnston; a brother, Harold Gaul, Grand Junction, Colorado; 4 sisters, Lois Crego and husband Leland, Wellington, Colorado, Donna Hensley, Ford, Sharon Steele and husband Max, Tribune, Kansas and Pat Dome and husband Bob, Cheney, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Gene and Vernon Gaul and a sister, Betty Day.
Private family graveside services will be at the Ford Cemetery with Pastor Suzie Woods officiating. There will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place.
The family would like to extended their thanks for the wonderful care given to Sonny at Minneola Health Care, especially to Dr. Tony Luna, Jon Borchard and Joyce Vantuyl.
