Lucas, who grew up in Dodge City, is the recipient of more than 22 military awards including a Bronze Star, six Army achievement medals, and awards for humanitarian service and the global war on terrorism. Since joining the Army in 1983, he has served at White Sand missile range, where he provided base law enforcement and security for nuclear testing and the space shuttle; at Fort Stewart in Georgia, where his squadron led the invasion into Saudi Arabia and defeated the retreat of the Republican Guard out of Kuwait; at Fort Meade in Maryland, where he provided security escort for President Bush's visit to the National Security Agency following the attack on the World Trade Center; in Biloxi, Miss., and New Orleans, where he provided law enforcement and medical support following Hurricane Katrina; in Baghdad, Iraq, where he trained Iraqi police and provided joint security; and in various locations training National Guard soldiers for overseas duty. He is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan soon, where he will train Afghanistan correction officers and run part of a detention facility.
