DODGE CITY – Patricia Lee McDonald Rebein, 88, died at her home in Dodge City on May 4, 2022.
She was born in Wichita, Kansas, on February 18, 1934, and grew up there and in Maple Hill, Kansas, where she spent many happy summers visiting her maternal grandparents. She loved her time at Wichita East High School, where she was a varsity cheerleader and homecoming queen nominee. After graduating from East in 1952, she attended St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City as a member of its inaugural class. At St. Mary’s, she met the love of her life, Bill Rebein, a football-playing farmer with a brand new car. The two married on June 7, 1954.
Pat was a devoted wife and mother of seven sons born between 1955 and 1967. After the last of her boys entered first grade, she took a job at First National Bank, rising from teller to new accounts manager, a position that suited her outgoing personality. She later worked as office manager of the Dodge City branch of the Federal Land Bank, retiring in 1998. While still working full-time, Pat returned to school at St. Mary of the Plains, earning a BA in lay ministry in 1992, the year the college closed. On the day of her graduation, she received a special award commemorating the fact that she was a member of both the first cohort to arrive at St. Mary’s in 1952 and the last to graduate in 1992.
Pat’s faith in God guided and inspired her throughout her long life. Confirmed in the Catholic faith while a student at St. Mary’s, she became a devout member of Sacred Heart Cathedral and later of Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral, both in Dodge City. For many years, she rose before dawn each weekday to unlock the doors of the church for daily Mass. She served the church and the wider community in a number of important ministries, including the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), Manna House of Dodge City, and Hospice of the Prairie, among others.
Adored by her many friends, Pat loved to listen to and support those she cared about. She was an avid reader, always ready to talk about books. Her beloved book clubs included Tom’s Girls, a group of Thomas Merton fans. She loved gardening, dogs, taking long walksespecially at the Lazy R Ranchand quilting. She made quilts for each of her grandchildren, and these quilts are now cherished reminders of a life well-lived.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Malinda McDonald, and by her siblings Guyla Jo Weatherby, Danny L. McDonald, Randy McDonald, and Scott McDonald.
She is survived by Bill, her husband of 67 years; sons David (Bernice) Rebein, Alan Rebein, Tom (Angie) Rebein, Joe (Susan) Rebein, Steve (Roxanne Wu) Rebein, Robert (Alyssa) Rebein, and Paul (Lori) Rebein; grandchildren Benjamin Rebein, Adam Rebein, Megan Kitts, Kayla Keeshan, Will Rebein, John Rebein, Sami Mihali, Mimi Rebein, Ria Rebein, and Jake Rebein; and great grandchildren Charlotte and Alexander Rebein, Caden Wiser-Rebein, Brooklyn Rebein, Rowan Keeshan, and Huxley Keeshan.
