Helping birds survive winter

The last two winters were so brutal that many birds died from the cold even in southern Oklahoma where I live. I have not had bluebirds nesting in the boxes in my yard for the last two years, and they always raised two broods every summer for years. This is a good time for us to help repay the beautiful birds that provide us with so much enjoyment and eat so many insects in our landscapes. My bird feeders are constantly visited by finches, cardinals, woodpeckers, doves, and one fat squirrel that does not even run anymore when I try to scare it away. He is also super gymnastic because he jumps from the Chinese Pistache tree nearby to the feeder, grabs a pawful of black-oil sunflower seeds, and hangs upside down from his back feet while enjoying his snack.
