The Carnegie Art Center, 701 N. 2nd Ave., is proud to announce the 2022 Western Heritage Art Contest. This juried art show promises payouts of $400 for the first place winner, $300 for the second place winner, $200 for the third place winner and two $100 gift certificates for honorable mentions.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor, This paper recently published a misleading letter to the editor concerning the so called “Value Them Both” amendment. The author stated the amendment did not seek to eliminate the right to abortion and was primarily concerned with preventing the government funding of abortion.

Lloyd Frederick Mueller, Sr.

La Junta, Colorado - Lloyd Frederick Mueller, Sr., 88, of La Junta, CO passed away on July 16, 2022, at the Bent County Healthcare Center in Las Animas, CO. He was born on August 8, 1933 to Frederick & Margaret (Lampe) Mueller in Spearville, KS. He married Judith A. Wright on October 25, 1958; she preceded him in death on April 3, 1996. He graduated from Dodge City High School in 1953. He worked laying cement with his dad and helping doing farm work before he went to the Army, in 1954 1956 as a Paratrooper 82nd airborne at Ft. Bragg, NC. He went to work for the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad in 1957 until 1988. He lived in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Pueblo and La Junta. He settled in La Junta in 1965. He drove the special needs bus for La Junta Schools and drove the Swink Activity and Route Bus, retiring in May of 2019. During the summers he harvested for longtime friends in and around Dodge City, KS. Lloyd enjoyed gardening, camping, woodworking and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always willing to help others. He was a member of the La Junta Jaycees, a life member of the La Junta Elks #701 and the Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish from 1960 until 2022.

Jetmore Mary Joanne Sorem, 89, passed away July 17, 2022 at Hodgeman County Health Center ISB, Jetmore. Mary Joanne was born November 13, 1932 in Dodge City, the daughter of Louis C.

SANKO-HENDRICKS, Carolyn

Carolyn Marie (Sanko) Hendricks passed away July 2, 2022 at Gurnee Place Memory Care Community, Gurnee IL. Carolyn was born in Spearville, KS on May 14, 1951, the daughter of Leo and Alice (James) Sanko. Her son Jeffrey Hendricks, wife Judi, and young grandchildren Brody 6, Audrey 5, and Whitney 3 live in Libertyville, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother James Sanko. Her sister Mary and husband Chuck Hattrup, live in Manhattan, KS.

Homicide suspect Arreola turns himself in to Wichita police

According to a press release from the Dodge City Police Department, Aaron Andres Arreola, the 27-year-old Dodge City man on the run from the scene of a grisly homicide, turned himself into Wichita law enforcement at about 11:45 a.m. July 20.
