Day 12, Kansas Wheat harvest report

This is day 12 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and the Kansas Grain and Feed Association. Trevor Cox, field agronomist, with Central Valley Ag Co-op in Clay Center, reported that harvest began in their area on June 23.

Summer conditions welcome Spider Mites

The recent hot, dry temperatures we have seen this summer have brought on one of the most common pest problems I see this time of year-spider mites. These little pests tend to attack plants that face the stresses of heat and drought.

City of Dodge City lifts water watch

The City of Dodge City Water Watch that was issued on June 17, 2022, is lifted effective Friday, July 1. Following the Water Conservation Plan and Ordinance No. 3583, a water watch is terminated when the triggering events have ceased to exist.

Dodge City A’s: Bee Jays beat the A’s

The Dodge City A’s traveled to Liberal July 29 night to face the Bee Jays and lost 11-1. The A’s fell behind early in the game thanks to a four-run inning by the Bee Jays in the first inning.

Dodge City Toros Soccer

The Dodge City Toros soccer team finished the regular season in first place and as a result qualified for the 2022 UPSL National Playoff. The Toros’ regular season record was six wins, three draws and one loss.

Maria De Jesus Smith, 50 of Plains, KS., passed away on June 24, 2022. She was born June 9, 1972.

Arlene Faye Randle

Arlene Faye Randle, 89 of Dodge City, KS., passed away on June 29, 2022. .

James Pendergast

James (Jim) Max Pendergast died peacefully on June 8, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born in Dodge City, Kansas on February 16, 1961. Raised in Dodge City, Jim moved to Colorado when he was 18. He loved telemark skiing, hiking, biking, rafting, climbing 14-eers and spending time at his cabin. He was well-read, quick to smile and make others laugh, spiritual, generous and kind. During his long career as a self-employed artisan, off-the-grid furniture maker, carpenter, project manager and builder, he created beautiful living spaces for custom homes. His work appeared in several architectural magazines and the Discovery Channel. Above all Jim was a loving family man to his wife, children, a hat trick of labradors and a few good cats. He was preceded in death by his parents Ken and Maxine and is survived by his wife Sharon, son Jacob, daughter Emma, brothers Mike (Gwen), Keith, Steve (Patrice) and sisters Donna (Doug) and Debbie (Karl), as well as numerous, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends who loved him and will miss him dearly. A funeral/memorial service was held at Ryssby Church, in Longmont, CO on June 17, 2022.

Timothy Martinez

Wichita-Timothy James Martinez, 63, made it to the gates of Heaven on June 25, 2022. He was born on July 21, 1958 in Dodge City, Kansas the loving son of Joseph Q.
